Deposit Guarantee Fund organized a guest lecture for the students of Taras Shevchenko National University of Kyiv

Press Release

On April 25, 2022, the Deposit Guarantee Fund (DGF) organized for students of Taras Shevchenko National University of Kyiv a guest lecture by Mr Bert Van Roosebeke, Senior Policy and Research Advisor of the International Association of Deposit Insurers (IADI). The event was attended by 60 university students and teachers.

In her introductory remarks, Svitlana Rekrut, Managing Director of the DGF, thanked Mr. Van Roosebeke for sharing his expertise with the students.  At the same time, she noted that since its inception, the DGF has had to deal with the effects of two crises in the banking sector – in 2008 and in 2014-2016. The total amount of covered deposits paid to the depositors of bankrupt banks exceeded UAH 95 billion.

"However, today we are facing a crisis that cannot be compared to the previous ones - it is a brutal military attack on our country. It is much more complex, since it is not possible to predict when it will end. Due to this, we had to take an unprecedented step to protect depositors of the banks - introduce initiated by the President of Ukraine 100% deposit guarantee. This way we demonstrated the confidence in the stability of Ukraine's banking system and assured depositors that their money is well protected. After all, the mission of such institutions as the Deposit Guarantee Fund is to protect the rights of depositors,” - said Svitlana in her speech. She also urged the students to study hard, because in the near future their knowledge and skills will be much needed for the rebuilding of the country.

Mr. Bert Van Roosebeke thanked DGF Ukraine for their invitation and made a presentation on IADI news in research and policy in deposit insurance during which he focused on the mandates and powers of deposit insurers such as the Deposit Guarantee Fund in different jurisdictions. He also reviewed the latest trends and emerging issues in deposit insurance, including the impact of climate change, digitalization, including introduction of the digital currencies of central banks, the Covid-19 pandemic, etc.
